The Finnish Spitz, who is also known as the Suomenpystykorva, is as his name let us imagine, originates from Finland. The Finnish Spitz was originally used to hunt games, from bear to squirrel. But he was particularly good at hunting Finnish game birds, known as capercaillie and black grouse.

This fox-like medium sized breed, is courageous, faithful, and has the manners of a true gentleman. The Finnish Spitz makes an ideal family companion and he is especially good with children.

The first Finnish Spitz were imported in Canada in the late 1960’s and the breed was recognized by the CKC and first shown in 1974. Thanks to his many fanciers, the Canadian Finnish Spitz Club was formed in 1976 to promote and protect the Finnish Spitz in Canada .
